How to prepare your generator for storage
Posted by Mowercentre | 20th June 2019
Proper storage preparation is essential to keep your generator in top condition—both mechanically and cosmetically. Whether you’re putting it away for the season or just storing it for a few weeks, following these steps can prevent rust, corrosion, fuel issues, and startup headaches down the track.
🧼 1. Clean Your Generator
- Wipe it down: Use a damp cloth to clean dirt, dust, and grime off the unit.
- Paint touch-ups: Cover any paint chips to prevent rust.
- Rust protection: Lightly oil any exposed metal areas prone to corrosion.
⛽ 2. Fuel System: Handle With Care
Fuel deteriorates surprisingly fast—sometimes within 30 days! As it breaks down, it can form gum deposits and clog your carburetor, making the generator difficult to start.
You have two options:
✅ Option A: Drain the Fuel
- Use a siphon to remove fuel from the tank, or
- Locate the carburetor drain screw and drain into a suitable container.
- Dispose of fuel safely, according to local regulations.
✅ Option B: Use a Fuel Stabilizer
- Add a quality fuel stabilizer to your fuel tank.
- Run the generator for a few minutes to circulate the treated fuel through the system.
- This method keeps fuel fresh for up to 24 months.
🛢️ 3. Engine Oil & Cylinder Protection
- Change the oil before storing.
- Remove the spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon of clean oil into the cylinder.
- Gently pull the starter rope a few times to distribute the oil.
- Reinstall the spark plug.
- Slowly pull the rope until you feel resistance—this puts the engine at top dead centre, which helps prevent internal corrosion.
🔋 4. Battery Maintenance (If Applicable)
- Charge the battery fully before storing.
- If possible, recharge it once a month to maintain battery health.
🏠 5. Safe Storage Tips
- Store in a well-ventilated, cool, and dry area.
- Keep it away from open flames or spark-producing appliances (e.g., furnaces, water heaters).
- Avoid high humidity—moisture encourages rust and corrosion.
- Place on a level surface to prevent oil or fuel leaks.
- Once cool, cover with a breathable cloth cover (avoid plastic—it traps moisture).
🔄 6. When Bringing It Out of Storage
- If the generator was stored with fuel for over 12 months, drain and refill with fresh petrol.
- If you pre-oiled the cylinder, don’t worry—a little smoke at startup is normal.
Final Tip:
Routine maintenance and smart storage prep will keep your generator running reliably for years to come. And if you’re ever unsure, refer to your owner’s manual—or give us a shout!
