How to start your generator – Quick Start Guide

Posted by Mowercentre | 16th June 2019

Whether you’re firing up your generator for the first time or dusting it off after a break, this quick-start guide will get you powered up in no time. Each model is a bit different, so always refer to your owner’s manual—but here’s a simple overview to get you started safely and smoothly.

🧰 Preparation: Safety First

Read the Owner’s Manual
Don’t skip it! Every generator is a little different. Check for unique features and safety warnings.

Move It Outside
NEVER run a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces. Always operate outside in a well-ventilated area.

Avoid Using in the Rain or Storms
Water and electricity don’t mix. Operating during rain can damage the unit and increase shock risk.

Check Fuel & Oil Levels
Use fresh unleaded fuel and ensure the oil level is topped up. Most generators won’t start (or stay running) if the oil is too low.

Unplug All Loads Before Starting
Never start the generator with appliances already plugged in—this could damage the generator or your gear.

🔧 Starting Your Generator

  1. Turn the Fuel Tap On
(Some models combine this with the ignition switch.)
  2. Turn Choke On
(Unless your unit has an automatic choke.)
👉 After the engine starts, move choke to Run once it warms up.
  3. Open the Fuel Breather Valve
(Located on the fuel cap—common on inverter models.)
  4. Turn Ignition Switch to ‘On’
  5. Start the Engine
  • Pull the recoil cord
  • Turn the ignition key, or
  • Press the electric start button (depending on your model)

🎉 Once it’s running, you’re good to plug in your appliances!

⛽ Refueling Tips

🚫 Never refuel a running or hot generator!
Turn it off, let it cool down completely, and then refill with fresh fuel to avoid accidents or fires.

💡 Quick Troubleshooting Tip

If your generator won’t start or starts and stalls, check the troubleshooting section in your manual—it’s often something simple like a closed fuel valve or dirty air filter.
